Inovasi Digital and Barry Callebaut Collaborate to Build Reliable Cocoa Farmers Data for Traceability and Sustainability

Scroll

As global market requirements continue to evolve, cocoa supply chains are facing growing expectations to demonstrate stronger sustainability practices, improved traceability, and readiness for deforestation-free regulations. For companies and stakeholders working in the cocoa sector, the ability to understand where cocoa is produced, who is involved in the supply chain, and how farmer-level data is collected has become increasingly important.

Reliable farmer data is a critical foundation for sustainability programs and responsible sourcing. Accurate spatial data, socio-economic information, and production profiles can help strengthen supply chain visibility, support traceability, and provide the evidence needed to respond to global market requirements, including regulations related to deforestation-free products.

To support this need, Inovasi Digital is implementing the Cocoa Farmer Survey Program in Lampung and Sulawesi. The program aims to collect and develop accurate farmer-level data, including spatial information, socio-economic profiles, and cocoa production data. This data foundation is expected to support sustainability program implementation, cocoa supply chain traceability, and readiness for evolving global market requirements.

As part of its collaboration with Barry Callebaut, Inovasi Digital conducted a field team training to support the implementation of the program. The training was conducted in two locations: Lampung on 8 June 2026 and Sulawesi on 10 June 2026. It was designed to prepare regional coordinators, QA/QC assistants, and survey institution coordinators before field mobilization, ensuring that all teams share a common understanding of the survey methodology, data quality standards, digital tools, and field reporting protocols.

The program targets data collection from approximately 50,000 cocoa farmers across Lampung and Sulawesi. Given the scale and complexity of the survey, field team readiness plays a critical role in ensuring that data collection is conducted consistently, accurately, and responsibly.

EQHunt as a Key Tool for Building a Stronger Field Data Foundation

The Cocoa Farmer Survey Program is supported by EQHunt, Inovasi Digital’s digital survey application, which enables field teams to collect structured, consistent, and traceable farmer data directly from the field. Through the application, field teams can record farmer profile information, capture GPS and geospatial data, document field findings, and synchronize survey records to support the development of a reliable cocoa farmer database.

To ensure EQHunt is applied consistently and accurately across survey areas, the field team training equipped participants with practical knowledge on application setup, form navigation, farmer data entry, GPS data capture, offline data collection, data synchronization, and troubleshooting common technical challenges during fieldwork.

Beyond the use of digital tools, the training also covered the broader survey methodology and operational workflow, including project objectives, team roles, reporting lines, documentation standards, and field implementation procedures. By combining EQHunt, geospatial data collection, and clear operational protocols, the training helped prepare field teams to collect accurate, consistent, and responsible data across Lampung and Sulawesi.

Ensuring Data Quality and Responsible Data Collection

High-quality data is essential to ensure that the cocoa farmer database can be used as a credible foundation for traceability, sustainability programs, and responsible sourcing decisions. To maintain the reliability of the survey results, the training included a dedicated session on Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC). The trainees were introduced to data quality standards, daily QC checklists, procedures for identifying data inconsistencies, and escalation mechanisms for resolving issues found during fieldwork.

Beyond technical accuracy, the training also highlighted the importance of responsible data collection. Prospective survey team members received guidance on data confidentiality, personal data protection, informed consent, and survey ethics. These principles are essential to ensure that data collection is conducted with respect for farmers, transparency, and proper governance throughout the survey process.

Supporting Cocoa Traceability and Sustainability

Reliable cocoa traceability begins with quality farmer data. Through its collaboration with Barry Callebaut, Inovasi Digital supports the development of a stronger data foundation for cocoa traceability and sustainability programs. By combining digital survey tools, geospatial data collection, field methodology, and data governance, this approach helps strengthen supply chain visibility and support better-informed responsible sourcing decisions.

As expectations for transparency and sustainability continue to grow, farmer-level data will play an increasingly important role in connecting field realities with risk identification, market readiness, and responsible sourcing action.
